Lions and Tigers and Bears!

Of course, first and foremost Philadelphia Zoo visitors will appreciate the incredible animals on view for their learning and enjoyment. Learn about carnivorous mammals like the African Wild Dog and the Cheetah, primates like the Guinea Baboon, Western Lowland Gorilla, or the Golden Lion Tamarin. Enjoy the beauty and grace of magnificent ungulates like Burchell’s Zebra, Mhorr’s Gazelle, and the Sable Antelope. If creepy crawlies are more your speed, the Philadelphia Zoo has a great Reptile and Amphibian House with a variety of lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs and toads.

 

Enjoy the Bird House and Bird Valley, the pride of the Philadelphia Zoo, and discover birds of prey like the Northern Bald Eagle, cranes and rails like the West African Crowned Crane, Flamingos like the Caribbean Flamingo. You will also find the African Gray Parrot, the Humboldt Penguin, an Emu, and the Mandarin Duck.

 Philadelphia Zoo Tours

 Visitors to the Philadelphia Zoo are encouraged to take a tour with one of the professionally trained volunteer docents who offer thematic tours on just about anything you can think of! Philadelphia Zoo tours focus on different subjects of interest in zoology and conservation and include the following:

  • Endangered Species and Conservation Issues – The Philadelphia Zoo protects a number of animals on the endangered species list. Learn what they are doing to help them.

  • Adapting – Animals adapt to their surroundings. In these tours, you can learn how the animals at the Philadelphia Zoo adapt and survive.

  • Mating (For Adults) – This tour focuses on the reproductive habits and rituals of the animals at the Philadelphia Zoo.

  • Biblical Animals – Find out what the animals housed at the Philadelphia Zoo did according to the Bible.

  • The Reptile and Amphibian House – This tour focuses on the slimier set of inhabitants at the Philadelphia Zoo.

  • Architecture, Art, Design – Learn about the unique sculptures and artwork as well as the buildings at the Philadelphia Zoo: how they were built, their structure and their design.

  • Flora and Fauna – Enjoy the horticultural delights of the Philadelphia Zoo and learn how they provide sustenance as well as beauty.

Special zoo tours are available for children, including a lesson on the five senses and how animals use them to survive as well as a lesson on adapting to environment that is specifically geared to the understanding of a child. You may even request a personalized tour designed just for you!

The Philadelphia Zoo provides a variety of special attractions for you to enjoy. Choose from any of the following any time of year:

 

  • Dodge Wild Earth – Take a wild 3-D ride inside the virtual simulator and explore Africa like you’ve never seen it before.

  • Amoroso's PZ Express – The Philadelphia Zoo maintains a train right out of the Victorian era for the kids to enjoy.

 

Between the months of April and October, you will be able to check out the following exciting Philadelphia Zoo special attractions:

  • Channel 6 Zooballoon – Take a ride 400 feet above the earth and see what the birds see when they fly over the Philadelphia Zoo.

  • Birds of Australia – A bird house without the house! Play outside with friendly lorikeets.

  • Camel Safari – Ride the camel and explore Africa like you were really there!

  • Draft Horse and Pony Rides – Camels not for you? Check out one of the Philadelphia Zoo horses or ponies.

  • Swan Boat Rides – Take a paddleboat ride around the Philadelphia Zoo’s Bird Lake, the lake that starred in E.B. White’s “Trumpet of the Swan”.
